In 1969 the Cuyahoga River in Ohio caught fire. This river became a symbol for the cost of unregulated pollution and gave momentum for those who wanted to stop and prevent it. On April 22, 1970 the first Earth Day, 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment.
