Earn $800 Toward Your Tuition Turning Trash to Treasure

Sertoma, which stands for SERvice TO MAnkind is an international service organization dedicated to assisting those with hearing, speech and communication issues. Sertoma supports youth, democracy and civic service. Weld Women’s Sertoma has contributed both financially and with service, to a variety of local groups including the Weld Food Bank, A Women’s Place, Connections for Independent Living, Weld Furniture Bank, The Poudre River Trail and Learning Center, Greeley Habitat for Humanity, Greeley Transitional House, and other local organizations.

Weld Women’s Sertoma received a grant from US Bank with the instructions that the money be used for Art and Education. We have decided to help a University of Northern Colorado student with tuition by engaging in a Functional Art Competition.

Too many items are finding there way to landfills. In the past three decades alone, one-third of the planet’s natural resources have been consumed. On average, each person in the United State produces 4½ pounds of garbage a day. That is twice what we each made 30 years ago. All of this trash is discarded. In fact, 99% of the items we purchase are trashed within six months. (Ask Hollis for references.)

It is important that we think sustainably and creatively in order to preserve our natural resources. How can we use what ends up in the trash in creative and functional ways? Clipboards made from discarded circuit boards, wine racks made from film reels, beautiful tables, lamps, chairs and headboards, storage units, jewelry, vases, made with discarded scrap metal, reclaimed wood, computer frames, old silverware, skis and stiletto’s have all been artfully crafted.  What will you create?

Please present with your submission of Functional Art Trash to Treasure, a description of the trash or re-purposed items and where you located these items. Any other information you want to add will be appreciated.

The winner of the contest will also be required go to the Boys and Girls club and present a lesson about sustainability and creativity.

Submissions must to be completed prior to April 22, 2009 Earth Day.  Submission will be showcased from April 22 through April 25, 2009. Award winner will be notified no later than April 26, 2009.
